Isla Mujeres is located in the exotic Caribbean Sea, very close to the well-known Yucatán Peninsula, precisely to the southwest of Mexico.

This beautiful island belongs to one of the 11 municipalities that make up the state of Quintana Roo, and it’s located just about 13 kilometers from Cancún.

The island was discovered in the year 1517 when Francisco Hernández de Córdoba stumbled upon it during an expedition. During the pre-Hispanic era, the island was dedicated to Ixchel, who was the Maya goddess representing the moon, fertility, and love. As a result, it received millions of offerings in the form of women, which were deposited on its beaches. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived, they found these offerings and decided to name the island “Isla Mujeres” or “Island of Women.”
