Isla
Mujeres belongs to a country of great cultures, a land of many
legends, customs and traditions that are part of every Mexican's
identity.
Many
traditions and customs are passed from generation to generation.
Many of them come from the pre-Hispanic times; as time goes by,
some of them have disappeared while others have developed; the
Aztec culture took the celebration of the Day of the Dead very
seriously. When the Spaniards and Christianism arrived, it gave
birth to a great mixture that is now unique in the world.
Nowhere
else in the world do people laugh at Death or “eat it”.
Here on Isla Mujeres as in the rest of the country, they do. From
October 28th to November 2nd, everybody lives and celebrates with
their dead ones and therefore with Death.
On
those days, the islanders get ready to welcome their relatives
or friends who have passed away. Cemeteries are full of colorful
flowers and smelly food.
